Barefoot Trimmer
Pam Dunkle
Barefoot Performance and Rehab, Bozeman

Pam Dunkle is a lifetime horse enthusiast with over 38 years of experience in various areas of equine care, training, and riding. After working with performance and ranch horses, she began to realize that hoof care, nutrition and saddle fit are only a few of the incredibly important aspects of maintaining a healthy horse. With a BS in Animal Science, and over 15 years experience as a veterinary technician, she decided to concentrate on barefoot hoof care, alternative healing, and nutrition.
Pam feels that continuing education on an annual basis is very important. After attending training seminars with some of the best in the field of high performance hoof care, (Paige Poss, Pete Ramey, KC LaPierre, Martha Olivo, and Tracy Ovineck), she utilizes the Synergetic Trim* as the best method for healing and maintaining healthy horse hooves and bodies.
She is excited that her husband Rich and daughter Ashley have joined her in the family business of healing horses. Ashley comes with 9 years experience trimming, is a talented healer, and is a 2005 graduate of the MSU Horseshoeing School. Rich has long been providing hoof care for ranch horses, has 7 years experience as a veterinary assistant, and also has degrees in Animal Science and Ag Education.

*The (Sin-er-’jet-ic) Trim: The interaction of energy, physiological balance, and healing
intention to create hoof care with results greater than the individual parts combined.

Equine Structural Integration Deep Tissue Therapist
April Johnston, Bozeman

April is a professional scientist, published author, and a longtime partner to her horses. April's journey away from her formal academic training began after experiencing the amazing results of this bodywork herself. She broke her back in 1991 in a riding accident and for years tried chiropractic, massage, ultrasound therapy, drugs, reiki, and acupuncture to relieve chronic pain resulting from this injury. All the treatments provided some relief - but only structural integration created the most permanent changes and relief. Then, her dressage mare was having trouble flexing at the poll and bending to the right. April asked her human "rolfer", Noel Clark, to come work on the mare. The results after one hour of were very noticeable- there was a difference in the trot, suppleness, and overall demeanor. Seeing how her mare responded to this work made April want to bring the benefits of structural integration to her equine friends.

In addition to her many years of professional training and experience with biology, April has completed the certification process for equine structural integration. She studyied under Joseph Freeman, a certified structural integrator, who founded an equine school in 1995 affiliated with the Bancroft School of Massage in New England. Accreditation is 500 hours of hands-on work plus four week long intensive “modules” spent with the instructor. Joseph Freeman and his wife Jacqueline work closely with the governing national organization of structural integration that oversees certification of human practitioners. While there are human practitioners throughout the country, there are only a few equine practitioners. Currently, April is the the only ESI practitioner in the State of Montana.

Equine CranioSacral Therapist
Cathy Haggerty and Margot Boileau
The team of PEGASUS THERAPEUTICS and 16 HANDS, Bozeman

Craniosacral Therapy is a "hands on" modality using a very gentle touch that works directly with the central nervous system affecting physical, mental as well as emotional "issues". The therapy is founded in osteopathic medicine and and has been used on people and animals for many years. By connecting into the "Craniosacral Rhythm" one can detect and relieve restrictions and abnormalities that can cause pain, system dysfunctions and emotional challenges, to name a few. Our equine friends respond very favorably to this therapy.

Cathy Haggerty, CNHP, Pegasus Therapeutics

Applying “holistic health” solutions to enhance equine and soil health and performance came into my awareness thanks to several of my Equine Professors’, an insightful supplement company and an enlightened Veterinarian. In my pursuit to do my best for Equine athletes, I’ve studied Alternative Equine Therapies including Acupressure, Bio-energy analysis, Equine B.E.S.T., Upledger Equine Craniosacral I and II. And for their human partners, Uplegder Craniosacral I, II, Advanced Mouthwork and NeuroVascular Flow, Reiki and completion of Certified National Health Professional studies. Also, I’m now engaged with a company that seeks to end world hunger, and that has both inside and outside age reversal products. I’m delighted to be working for the land, the horses and their people using natural solutions from the inside out and the soil up to balance those that support us human beings.

Margot Boileau, CNHP, 16 Hands

Horses have been a lifelong passion for me throughout my years of work as a hairdresser, medical assistant and working in the floral industry I have always maintained my connection to the horse, which began at the wee age of three. Horses have guided me through childhood, carried me from the show ring to the wilderness and over miles of physical, spiritual and emotional trails in between.   The soul of the horse has been my impetus for pursuing years of instruction, training clinics and equine assisted personal growth opportunities.
I have been a Reiki practitioner since 1997, adding other complimentary energy healing practices over the years.  In 2003 CranioSacral Therapy became my focus of study which has included specific Equine CST training. The learning and courses are ongoing and the work continues to evolve, including completion of Certified National Health Professional status. These methods assist in accessing body wisdom for repatterning physical, emotional and mental energies with the result of enhanced wellness.

Pasture Management Specialist
Jennifer Mohler
Bridger Scientific, Inc., Belgrade

Jennifer Mohler of Bridger Scientific, Inc., is a resource conservationist specializing in holistic and sustainable land management. Jennifer has worked with a diverse group of public, private, and non-profit entities to conserve natural resources by promoting sustainable practices and conservation minded weed and grazing management plans. As a horse specialist, she assists landowners in finding a balance between the horse's needs with the land's limitations and offers creative options to reduce costs, increase forage yields, manage weed populations, and improve animal health. Services of Bridger Scientific, Inc. include land management consulting, educational classes, and property design. You can reach Jennifer Mohler at 406-388-5668 or jenmohler@hughes.net.

No matter what size acreage you have, understanding and implementing sustainable management practices results in healthy horses, productive pastures, and sustainable resources. Montana is an arid landscape, resulting in limited grass resources for grazing animals, especially those with small acreages. It is important for landowners to understand that we can greatly influence the health and dynamics of our land simply by the way we manage it.

Sustainable land management is based on knowing your resources, managing them properly, and continual evaluation to ensure you’re on the right track. With good intentions, many horse owners allow thier horses to have unlimited acess to their land. Unfortunately, this plan often backfires and results in poor health for both the horse (obesity and laminitis) and the land (weeds). The honest truth is that there is nothing “natural” about keeping horses on small acreages. Ultimately, landonwers must work to find a balance between the horses's need and the land's limitations. Our environment (for both horse and human) is a dynamic system and conditions change constantly. Understanding & implementing the principals of sustainable land management is key to maintianing healthy pastures and healthy horses.

Riding Instructor
Karen Ososki
Karen Ososki Riding Instructor LLC, Bozeman

The holistic horsemanship approach needs to not only include the non-riding maintenance of the horse; proper hoof care, dentistry, skeletal and muscle adjustments, but most also include the training of the horse and rider.

Equine Athlete:
For an equine athlete to remain healthy, the horse needs to have its body (and mind) built up over a significant period of time. To perform to its highest level of potential, the horse needs to be put into a ‘correct frame’ or ‘position’ that allows it to develop the necessary muscles for balance and throughness. When these correct muscles have been developed, the equine athlete will be able to enjoy a great riding partnership for many years.

The goal is for the horse to regain the body position and balance it has when it is without the rider and to learn to move freely and easily under the rider’s weight. When the horse is able to retain this unrestrained way of moving, it relaxes. For relaxation, the rider and horse must find a place of balance. When the horse is in balance, then his motion can move without hindrance.

A general overview of equine body biomechanics will be presented at this clinic. On Saturday morning I will have a lecture and Saturday afternoon a groundwork demonstration that addresses how to develop proper equine balance and which exercises help develop the correct muscling to ensure equine soundness.

Riding Instructor
Spencer Dominick
Presenter and Demonstration Rider

Spencer Dominick is an accomplished and enthusiastic horseman. His partnership with horses began at the age of three. Within a few years, he was helping with the riding program at the 7D Ranch, a family operation run in Sunlight Basin, Wyoming. At this young age, he was riding to assist in managing range cattle, retrieving horses from pasture leased from Forest Service, and leading guest rides. Spencer spent 13 years wrangling for the 7D, Castle Rock Ranch, and Shoshone Lodge. In 1988, he joined the packtrip crew at the 7D as a packer and cook. He began spending his summers on trips in Shoshone National Forest and Yellowstone National Park. In 1991, he took over the management of the packtrip program for the 7D, a position that combined his horsemanship skills and his talent of working with people to improve their own level of comfort and ability.

Spencer’s professional horse training career started in the winter of 1999. He specializes in starting horses and mules as well as helping with problems in older horses. His training techniques are based on kindness, consistency and building trust with each horse. In addition, Spencer enjoys working with people and helping them to achieve a harmonious relationship with their horse through teaching communication, understanding and proper riding. He teaches private lessons as well as several clinics each year in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Georgia. Also, he is a teaching clinician for the Montana Horse Sanctuary.
